♡monster friends♡
My name is Helena and I am a neurodivergent, queer, Guatemalan-American, lowbrow artist. I focus on expressing the quintessential experience of Otherness that coincides with being neurodivergent; internal emotions through self portraiture, giving form to the intangible. At times these self portraits are a juxtaposition of horror and cute, weird and ethereal, meant to bring forth the absurdity of the pressure to fit into boxes created by societal norms. While this feeling of Otherness may not be a universal neurodivergent experience, it has been one that has impacted my life and continues to do so even as I continue to unearth more about myself.I view my creations as monsters. The word 'monster' derives from the Latin, monstrare, meaning 'to demonstrate', and monere, 'to warn'. Monsters, in essence, are demonstrative. They've revealed things to me before I could even understand them as a concept. My monsters are shown simply existing, trying to live their best lives. They're monster friends!I have a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from the Corcoran College of Art + Design. My monsters have shown in Clutter Gallery and VisArts Gallery. I currently run my own business selling art online and at conventions up and down the east coast.Please contact me through email or Instagram with any inquiries.
