Hi, my name is Nena and I'm the artist behind Nena Mágica! ♡ Nena is a term of endearment given to girls in Guatemala and various other countries throughout Latin America. I insisted this was my actual name while growing up and even now it's still my preferred name! ♡Nena Mágica can be roughly translated to Magical Girl~! ♡ I feel there is deep and magical significance for my artist name to have always been with me during my life. Some of my main inspirations are the ideas of magical girls; transformation, metamorphosis, healing, power, fate, destiny. ✧I explore ways of expressing Human through fragmented and dissolved bodies. While these bodies may look damaged, it represents the trauma we endure throughout life. This trauma can sometimes make us feel not human, but Other instead. Whether this trauma is physical or emotional, psychological, it changes our perception of Self.My bodies are decorated, some more colorful than others, covered in messages of affirmations or just silly memes. This is a reclamation of the body, of the Self. To show that we can find healing and joy, we can transform, we can enter a cocoon and come out more beautiful than ever in spite of the damage we've taken. In spite of the trauma we carry. In spite of being Other, we are also still Human. ♡ I call my work Purified Bodies/Cuerpos Purificados. They have gone through the process of purification, they are no longer corrupt despite how they may appear. ♡I am a Guatemalan-American, neurodivergent, queer artist. I have a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from the Corcoran College of Art + Design. My Purified Bodies have shown in Clutter Gallery and VisArts Gallery. I currently run my own business selling art online and at conventions up and down the east coast. Please contact me through email or Instagram with any inquiries. I take commissions on a case by case basis so please ask! ♡
